Sierra Nevada Ski Resort
The ski resort of Sierra Nevada is only 90 minutes drive or so from the coastal towns of the Costa Tropical. In fact from Salobrena which is the closest point, local enthusiasts expect the drive to take no more than about 70 minutes.

The Ski Resort is not however the sole domain of enthusiasts. Many visitors enjoy the village restaurants and bars as well as being part of the electric atmosphere.

A cable car ride to the first station is fun for all. At this level you can sit on the restaurant patios while people are skiing all around you.

Also from the first level there are dog sled rides which will take you up into the snow covered mountains.

The Golf Course at Motril is situated on the edge of the beach in one of the most peaceful settings.

Until 2005 a nine hole course it will be upgraded to18 holes from the summer of 2006. With the addition of  a number of impressive lakes and other water hazards the course presents a challenge to most club golfers.

Motril golf (Los Moriscos)  is 5 minutes from Salobreña village and little over 10 minutes from Almuñecar. Now that the 18 holes are fully operational (previously 9 holes) a second 18 hole course is planned to follow closely behind.

Add to this the new Salobreña course at Lobres and you will have a mini golf valley in the making.

Motril Golf is open to all comers at very nominal cost. Buggy's and clubs can be hired from the club house and there is a very nice restaurant plus beach side cafe snack bar terrace.

Almuñecar Market
Friday morning from about 9.30 until 2 in the afternoon Almuñecar hums.

It's market day and folks crowd in from miles around to snap up the "bargains". From handbags and shoes to bed covers and garden furniture, you will find it all at Almunecar market.

Set in a shaded avenue on the main N340 coast road it is very easy to find and there is ample parking.
Apart from the market stalls you will be often entertained by some exotic street performers. The picture to the right taken this summer is of a visiting South American pipe band - they had the whole market jumping.

By the market there are lots of good bars and restaurants, even McDonalds for the kids. Most of the bars in this area give unusually good tapas with your drinks - especially on Fridays.
Almuñecar market is a "must visit".

Junta de los Rios pools
fording the river at junta de los rios
About ten minutes drive inland from Almuñecar and through the Valle Tropical is Junta de Los Rios.

A unique experience and a wonderful day out for the family. Take a pic nic and plenty of cold drinks - you will not want to leave!!

Junta de Los Rios translates as "River junction". The rivers meet to form waterfalls and some deep and gloriously blue pools. There is a rope bridge over the top and a couple of jump off points for the braver and normally younger to enjoy.

This trip can be managed in a normal car but is ideal for four wheel drives. Because the road is a bit rough and perhaps because the place is not on the regular tourist beat - you will not be overcrowded.

There are a couple of tour companies that organise small tours into "river junction"
